Guidelines for Success with QR Tutors

DO:

  • Bring your books, assignments, calculator, pencil, notes, etc.
  • Bring an open mind.
  • Turn off your cell phone during your tutor session.
  • Attempt the problems first so that you know what questions to ask the tutor.
  • Come no later than 20 minutes before closing so we have time to help you.
  • Come prepared
    • with homework started or reviewed.
    • with lecture notes and reading material reviewed.
    • with calculator, book, and notebook.
  •  Understand that any missed lecture material should be obtained from the professor. Students not attending class are not to use the QR Center to cover missed classwork.
  • Understand that the tutor you work with may have never taken the class that you are asking for help in (or it may have been several years since they have seen the material). Be patient if they need a few minutes to think about the question(s) they are helping with.
  • Understand that the tutors are human. They make mistakes and have feelings.  Be respectful of this.

DO NOT:

  • Use the QR Center as a place to complain about your professor, your class, or your workload. A positive attitude will go a long way.
  • Expect the tutor to immediately know how to do every question in every assignment. In many cases, the tutor may have never seen the problem they are helping you with.
  • Expect the tutor to do your homework for you or guarantee completeness of answers. Consult your professor if you have questions concerning the final solution. Remember the tutors helping are PEER TUTORS, not
  •  Expect the QR Center to replace lecture attendance or consultation with professors. The QR Center is a supplemental service to course work.
  • Expect miracles
    • If you come in the day before an assignment is due and have not started it, the tutors can only do so much to help you.
    • A tutor cannot help you understand something in 30 minutes that has taken several weeks of class to cover.
    • If you come to a session without any notes or other materials, the tutor does not have any way to assess what you have covered and helping you becomes significantly more difficult.
  • Ask the tutor to do something that is dishonorable.
  • Be rude or confrontational with a tutor – you will be asked to leave if this happens.
